Marmalade
Marmalade Hill / District
Trendy, Chic, Historic
Marmalade Hill is one of Salt Lake’s oldest neighborhoods, located to the west of Capitol Hill. The area has steep, narrow and angular streets, many named after fruit trees, like Apricot, Quince and Almond to name a few.
Architectural Delight
You’ll get some exercise walking the area and be delightfully shaded by the mature trees that line the streets. Marmalade overflows with historic charm and architectural diversity, with a Russian influenced Church house next to Gothic Revival, surrounded Victorian homes, it’s one of the best places in the city to see such eloquent details. It’s a wonderful place to stroll, the Utah Heritage Foundation even provides a walking tour of the area.
It’s been the focus of renovation in terms of infrastructure and land development. Projects include water line upgrades a city library, and historical site consideration along with more upscale businesses, condos and apartments. The Marmalade District Lofts are the first solar town homes offered in Salt Lake City! If you aren’t particularly interested in being in city hustle and bustle, but still want to be a part of downtown, Marmalade is a good option and it’s an area worth investing in – values have gone up well, and the area gets more beautiful every year! It’s worth noting the Freeway access is probably the best in the city.
Neighborhood, Food & Play
On the very north border of Marmalade, you’ll find a great watering hole, The Garage on Beck, a great place to grab a drink, weekend or just kick back and listen to good, live music – don’t miss their fried funeral potatoes
Another great local joint is Em’s Restaurant serving seriously good cinnamon rolls, their patio seating is lovely and tucked away amongst the aforementioned fruit trees, nice and shady. Meet up with your friends to debrief after an eventful weekend and enjoy farm to table approach with fresh, seasonal menus.
A Community First Lifestyle
The Utah Pride Center is located here as is the Salt Lake Acting Company, one of two professional theatre companies in Utah – and one of our favorite places. Pack your own dinner and wine for an evening play – or stop by the green room for treats that support the Acting Company.
Each summer, The Capitol Preservation Board and the Utah Film Commission host a free movie series called “Movies Under the Stars.” From June to August, weather permitting, residents of the surrounding neighborhoods gather on the grounds to watch a variety of family-friendly movies. It’s a great way to spend an evening outdoor!
Looking for a taste of the great outdoors? You need only look to the east of the Capitol building to City Creek Canyon. This quiet, undeveloped area is less than a mile from the city center. The Canyon, with adjacent park, provides an escape for runners, bikers, strollers and hikers. The entrance to the canyon is in Memory Grove, a leash-free dog park, landscaped with lawns, statues and memorials that honor American soldiers.
Take an afternoon to visit to the Utah State Capitol and Capitol Complex, the grounds are beautiful with a new plaza, garden, and reflecting pool. Visitors can take some time to reflect at the Vietnam War Memorial and a monument dedicated to the Mormon Battalion.
